And lo, chess became ridiculously sexy.

There are dozens of reasons to love Criminal Minds, many of which serve to elevate the program far, far above everything else in the crime procedural genre both morally and stylistically, but one of my favorites is that they don’t strip their victims of their autonomy. (Mild spoilers after the jump)

This week’s plot was a little far-fetched, but that hardly mattered. Every time they let a victim fight back—And keep in mind, this is a lot—it makes me tingly down to my toes. Almost as much as it does when they show Reid being all assertive and awesome. I’ve been patiently waiting for a Reid episode since season five started, and I tell you what, that chess scene at the end was worth the wait. Leave it to Matthew Gray Gubler to transform chess into a panty-melting activity.

Oh, and a Star Trek red shirt joke + Jonathan Frakes in the same episode = A+++, would LOL again.

And how about Garcia’s new hair? I really like the change, although I was fond of the blonde if only because of all the fun colors she could put in it.

On a related tangent: I have recently become a massive Rossi fangirl. I’ve loved him for a long time, but at some point in the last month or so, that’s intensified to the point that he’s now risen to the “favorite characters” position previously only held by Reid and Hotch. He’s got sass, that David Rossi, and I have to respect that. It probably bears saying, though, that there isn’t a single character on the team I don’t adore. Yet another way the show sets itself apart.
