Jesus Christ, it’s the Oscars, get in the car!
I still have yet to see Avatar, principally because I am pretty sure it will send me into a frothing rage with its self-congratulatory heroic white man bullshit. As such, I can’t firmly attest to the quality of the film beyond its special effects, but let’s be honest, here: it’s James Cameron, so we know going in this isn’t going to be rocket science. Titanic won Best Picture despite not being all that great of a movie apart from its special effects, but it was undoubtedly revolutionary, just as Avatar is, and it begs the question: should excellence in special effects be taken into consideration when judging Best Picture, to the point that it overrides trite storylines? If so, why isn’t Star Trek nominated? Not that I think Star Trek is Best Picture fodder, but I think it’s an interesting question.
I’ve seen all but two of the ten Best Picture nominees, something I’m going to go about rectifying as soon as possible. The Academy isn’t going to give Best Picture to Tarantino, so Inglourious Basterds is out, as is Up, because it’s an animated feature. District 9 is too foreign, Precious is too mundane. Despite people bitching about The Blind Side not being worthy of its nomination, I thought it was a great film, and it’s pretty insulting to suggest it’s “filler” now that there are ten nominations every year. What does that say for all the other great movies that weren’t nominated? Seriously, people, shut the fuck up if you have nothing better to give than a knee-jerk reaction.
My pick for Best Picture is absolutely A Serious Man, but I have a feeling Up in the Air or The Hurt Locker will win. I haven’t seen The Hurt Locker yet, but everyone’s been creaming their pants over it like they creamed their pants over Up in the Air, so it seems likely.
I want Fantastic Mr. Fox to win Best Animated Feature, but I think that’s going to go to Up. If The Princess and the Frog wins, I might stab someone. It’s probably bad that I don’t give a shit about the acting nominations, although it’s very nice to seen Stanley Tucci on the list for his eerie turn in The Lovely Bones, a movie that I believe isn’t getting anywhere near the recognition is deserves. And where is Sam Rockwell’s nomination for Moon? See, this is why the Oscars piss me off.
So, what do you think? You can look at the full list of nominees at the Academy Awards website, here.

This. The Oscars never fail to piss me off, because without fail, either someone brilliant gets ignored or someone gets undue recognition.
Which reminds me, Stanley Tucci was also brilliant in Julie & Julia, which got shafted–okay, possibly because the Julie bit is fairly shit, and I LIKE Amy Adams–but Meryl Streep was amazing, and he was dead good.

AHHHH YES. So much yes! I’d forgotten he was in J&J, but he was lovely (But isn’t he always? Gosh, he’s wonderful). I’m expecting Streep to win Best Actress, but I haven’t seen many of the others in that category.

Actually, I’m quite impressed with the Best Actress category this year, though I’ve only seen Precious and Julie & Julia; I do know that Carey Mulligan really did put up a good show in An Education by all accounts, so there’s another decent performance.
(Incidentally, I say we extort someone to give us tickets to see Avatar, because I refuse to pay.)

Incidentally, I say we extort someone to give us tickets to see Avatar, because I refuse to pay.
LOLLL, this is a good plan, because I feel the same way. I’m not paying to revel in James Cameron’s white epic, even if I do like Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana.
I’m watching The Hurt Locker today, so all I’ll lack of the Best Picture noms is Avatar.

Along with race, I have a whole additional list of issues which amount to Not Paying. I mean, seriously, I’ll happily go and maybe even eat my words, but someone else needs to foot the bill.
I was going to say ‘let me know how The Hurt Locker is’, but of course you will, having a blog for that.
The difference between people creaming themselves over The Hurt Locker vs. Up In The Air is that The Hurt Locker is actually a pretty great movie.

Having just finished it, I have to absolutely agree on that point.
Also, my website is killing me, I can’t login to make my Oscar post!!!

I was wondering why you hadn’t posted about it yet since you’re usually all about the Oscars.
Normally I post from work but I have a different workstation now and people can see that I’m not doing work! Then I went to the movies.
